What is ISO 45001?
ISO 45001 is an International Standard that specifies requirements for an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system, with guidance for its use, to enable an organisation to proactively improve its OH&S performance in preventing injury and ill health. ISO 45001 is intended to be applicable to any organisation regardless of its size, type and nature. ISO 45001 enables an organisation, through its OH&S management system, to integrate other aspects of health and safety, such as worker wellness/wellbeing; however, it should be noted that an organisation can be required by applicable legal requirements to also address such issues.
What about certification?
Certification to ISO 45001 is not a requirement of the standard but can be a useful tool to demonstrate that you meet its criteria. If you are already certified to OHSAS 18001, and while it is a very different standard, you will already have some of the necessary tools and systems in place to implement ISO 45001.
When your organisation is ISO 45001 certified, it establishes your commitment to the health and welfare of your management and employees. Your certification provides credibility to external parties, including clients and stakeholders. ISO 45001 provides a structured health and safety management system standard to help your organization.
How do I get started?
If you are considering implementing ISO 45001, here are a few tips to get you started:
1. Perform an analysis of your organization’s context that is relevant to OH&S (such as interested parties) as well as the internal and external factors that might impact your business.
2. Establish the scope of the system, considering what you would like your management system to achieve.
3. Set your OH&S policy and objectives.
4. Define the time and frame in which you wish to implement your system and plan how to achieve it.
5. Determine any competence and/or resource gaps that need addressing before you can implement the standard
Already certified to OHSAS 18001?
The new ISO 45001 standard will eventually replace OHSAS 18001 but the standard won’t be phased out for good until 2021.
If you are currently certificated to the OHSAS 18001 standard then you will need to transition to the ISO 45001 requirements.
Unlike with the previous OHSAS 18001 certification, ISO 45001 is an accredited standard. Working with Exsolution Group for your certification proves your commitment to excellence.
