ISO 14001 has become the international standard for designing and implementing an environmental management system. The standard is published by ISO (the international Organization for Standardization), an international body that creates and distributes standards that are accepted world wide. The most recent version of the environmental management system requirements was published in 2015, and is referred to as “ISO 14001:2015.” The standard was agreed upon by a majority of member countries before being released and updated, and as such its has become an internationally recognized standard accepted by a majority of countries around the world.

With ISO 14001 Environmental Management you can;

  • Consistently meet your environmental responsibilities overtime
  • Differentiate your company and win more business
  • Improve company performance through resource savings

An ISO 14001 environmental management system will help you to monitor and manage your resources and environmental impacts whether you run a single site operation or a global business. As the world’s first environmental management system, it helps you to identify and control how your business affects the environment and helps put in place robust policies to conserve your resources and save money.

There are some of the benefits that our customers tell us they have received as a result of adopting and implementing a system that meets ISO 14001.

The standard allows:

  • You to become a more consistent competitor in your market place
  • Better manage your resources and reduce waste saving money
  • Comply with legislation, reducing the risk of fines and adverse publicity
  • Improve your corporate responsibility to meet your supply chain requirements
  • Motivate and engage staff with more efficient processes.
  • Broaden business opportunities by demonstrating compliance.

The old ISO 14001 standard asked organizations to establish a wide range of procedures. These included an environmental aspects procedure, a legal requirements management procedure, an awareness procedure, a communications procedure, a documents procedure, an operational procedure, an emergency preparedness and response procedure, a monitoring and measurement procedure, a compliance evaluation procedure, a non conformity management procedure, a record keeping procedure, and an audit procedure.

Now, only one procedure is left. The new ISO 14001 2015 standard asks you to establish an emergency preparedness and response procedure in section 8.2, and that’s the only one.

Instead of asking you to write procedures, the new standard expects you to maintain and control a wide range of documents (i.e., documented information). Since the new standard doesn’t tell you what to call these documents, you can call them procedures if you like. And of course, you still need to have documents except that now they’re called “documented information”. So, while on the surface this looks like a radical change, it probably isn’t.

By following through each of the stages and setting up a robust environmental management system, your organisation will benefit from cost savings and sales advantages that can increase your profits.

Because of its generic nature and universal acceptance, the ISO 14001 standard has the potential to affect the environmental management practices of virtually every manufacturing company in the world. It can also be used by charities, voluntary organisations, and trade associations. Any organisation whose products, services or day-to-day activities have an impact on the environment needs to be aware of ISO 14001.
